Cookbook Review: The School Year Survival Cookbook

This has been by far one of my favorite cookbooks. I remember being at Indigo on a Sunday afternoon and going through it, finding recipe after recipe of what seemed like food that I could live on. The authors Laura Keogh and Ceri Marsh also wrote “How to feed a family” which is my go-to cookbook for our family’s favorite pancakes, the amazing ALT sandwhich (avocado, lettuce and tomato – vegetarian BLT) and more recipes for roasted chickpeas and roasted pumpkin seeds than you could ever imagine.

But this new cookbook is even more. Their multigrain muffin recipe became a huge hit at one of the workshops we ran at work, so much that we got comments about it in our evaluation forms. Their yogurt parfait popsicles make the perfect snack or dare I say breakfast (they are in the breakfast chapter since they are like a breakfast parfait, only frozen!). My son and I are already superfans of their smoothie bowls like the Green Goodness Smoothie Bowl and the Tropical banana one. And really, who could go wrong with inspiring dinner ideas like Halibut tacos with strawberry salsa or delicious curries and butter chicken (I made butter “chickpeas” instead and it’s still smashing). I still want to dig into a few others that I’m dying to try: Salmon Dinner Tray Bake, Faux Pho, Chicken and Apple salad boats and let’s not forget all the easy recipes in their lunch chapter (their broccoli and cheddar patties are a must-make). Their chapter on snacks only gets better with inspiration like Blueberry grunt greatness (the most amazing name) and their energy bites (the one featuring sunflower seed butter, oats and shredded coconut is honestly the best recipe for energy bites I’ve ever found).

The truth is many of the recipes in here could please anyone, whether they have kids in tow or not. So if you’re looking for some inspiration in the kitchen, honestly, take a look, I promise you’ll find something in there that you’ll make over and over again.
